Meditation and visualization is a way to bring your goals and dreams into reality. Once you set a goal, visualizing it is a powerful way to stay on track. If you can “see” results in your mind, you’re more likely to feel positive about the work you need to do to get there. Plenty of successful people have used visualization to reach their goals (even Jim Carrey credits it for his success as an actor). After all, if you can dream it, you can achieve it.

WHY YOU SHOULD VISUALIZE YOUR GOALS

Before you dismiss visualization as too “woo-woo” for you, understand the logic behind it. A good goal is specific, and visualizing your goal forces you to define the details. Not just what you want, but when you want to accomplish it by, who will be involved in the process, the places your goal will take you, and the benefit you’ll get from reaching it.

It also helps you believe that the outcome is possible. When you set out to reach out a goal, there will inevitably be bumps in the road. Visualization helps you have faith in the process and in turn, keep going after you’re faced with a setback.

Just lying on a bed can be extremely uncomfortable for a woman in the later stages of pregnancy due to the massive gravitational strain placed on the body. The float tank is a wonderful haven for pregnant women. We do, however, recommend that pregnant women avoid floating during the first trimester.

There are a couple positions pregnant women can utilize while in the float tank. Lying on the back is how most guests typically float, this can possibly put pressure on the mothers stomach. Some guests prefer to float on their stomach. Choose what’s right for you and move in a gentle manner to avoid the salt solution dripping into your eyes.

Many people look forward to Fourth of July celebrations, which often include fireworks.

While lighting up the night sky is an anticipated holiday tradition, it may be a trigger for some.

The VA says the loud noises can trigger those dealing with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Larry Luzinski is a veteran who said there can be many different triggers for those who've been in combat.

“A loud noise will set them off,” said Luzinski. “Even a book dropping on the floor sometimes will make them think they got to head for cover.”

He said PTSD reactions come in many forms.

“Everybody’s got a different reaction,” said Luzinksi. “Some are just a mild jump, other people are running for cover.”

While there is no way to stop firework celebrations from happening, the treatment center says there are ways for vets to get help for upcoming celebrations.

One suggestion is surrounding yourself with a support system and reminding yourself that you will be hearing loud noises during the holiday week. We also offer our Hands for Heroes program for our float tank. This peaceful environment will help ease the discomfort of loud noises and soothe the central nervous system. While this is  no cure, it has surely been popular among veterans and instilling some quiet and calming time into their lives.

Where did floating begin? Why did it come about? All this and more in our edition of On Top of the Water.

Once upon a time there was a man named John C Lily. He was testing a question of "What happens if you remove the stimulation of the outside world?" The actual scientific hypothesis was "Many scientists wondered what would happen if a person were cut off from all sensory stimulation and from interactions with the world outside. Scientists influenced by the "behaviorist" school, thought of the brain as an organ that reacts to stimuli. They predicted that if all outside stimuli were cut off, the brain would cease its activity resulting in a condition resembling coma, or dreamless sleep." The result was "Dr. John Lilly tested these hypotheses with experiments he set up at the National Institutes of Mental Health Lab in the Virgin Islands. He limited stimulation to the minimum possible level while removing sources of discomfort and stress. His "isolation" tank design approached this ideal as closely as possible and the experiment was up and running by the end of 1954." 

His results? Incredible focus, relaxation, a greater degree of self-control, strength in his consciousness of situations, and so much more. "The important discovery was, "So within yourself you do have at least the circuitry to exert control over these systems. You can create a sense of well-being, or you can create a sense of fear out of the operation of your own bio-computer. That's the most important message we have in regard to self meta-programming. I saw that in the tank.""

The tank itself, originally the Sahmadi tank, which is what is located at Honest Floating inside Hands in Harmony, is the traditional shape of a rectangle and filled with 10 inches of water and 700 pounds of epsom salt. This large amount of epsom salt and water, at this point it is called a solution, allows the guest to float nearly on top of the water. They are suspended in a relaxing environment that is matching their internal body temperature of 93.5F, the solution via a heating element below the solution and the air via an infrared in the lid of the tank. The environment also removes light and sound. This is an excellent mixture of relaxation to tone down all the noise in our minds and the outside world. 

In 1972, Glenn Perry, a computer programer, read "Center of the Cyclone" by Dr John C. Lilly. He then took a workshop with Dr. Lilly and it turned his life around. It opened him up to the ideas of a float tank. Samadhi Tank Co., Inc. was started in 1972 and named by Dr. Lilly. The first tanks were designed by Glenn Perry with Dr. Lilly's assistance. "Dr. Lilly encouraged our work with the tank. He spilled lots of wisdom on us, gave us the specifications, gave us the program that we shouldn't program people before they used the tank, (and admitted that was his program), he gave us the name "Samadhi" and a lifetime of work which we greatly appreciate." said by Glenn Perry. To this day Glenn and his wife, Lee, Perry continue to make float tanks, always tweaking, perfecting, incorporating new technology, creating new sizes and commercial tanks.

The question of how much omega-3 to eat depends in large part on how much omega-6 we eat.

Over the course of human evolution there has been a dramatic change in the ratio of omega-6 and omega-3 fats consumed in the diet. This change, perhaps more than any other dietary factor, has contributed to the epidemic of modern disease.

Throughout 4-5 million years of hominid evolution, diets were abundant in seafood and other sources of omega-3 long chain fatty acids (EPA & DHA), but relatively low in omega-6 seed oils.

Anthropological research suggests that our hunter-gatherer ancestors consumed omega-6 and omega-3 fats in a ratio of roughly 1:1. It also indicates that both ancient and modern hunter-gatherers were free of the modern inflammatory diseases, like heart disease, cancer, and diabetes, that are the primary causes of death and morbidity today.

At the onset of the industrial revolution (about 140 years ago), there was a marked shift in the ratio of n-6 to n-3 fatty acids in the diet. Consumption of n-6 fats increased at the expense of n-3 fats. This change was due to both the advent of the modern vegetable oil industry and the increased use of cereal grains as feed for domestic livestock (which in turn altered the fatty acid profile of meat that humans consumed). 

Vegetable oil consumption rose dramatically between the beginning and end of the 20th century, and this had an entirely predictable effect on the ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fats in the American diet. Between 1935 and 1939, the ratio of n-6 to n-3 fatty acids was reported to be 8.4:1. From 1935 to 1985, this ratio increased to 10.3:1 (a 23% increase). Other calculations put the ratio as high as 12.4:1 in 1985. Today, estimates of the ratio range from an average of 10:1 to 20:1, with a ratio as high as 25:1 in some individuals.

In fact, Americans now get almost 20% of their calories from a single food source – soybean oil – with almost 9% of all calories from the omega-6 fat linoleic acid (LA) alone! (PDF)

This reveals that our average intake of n-6 fatty acids is between 10 and 25 times higher than evolutionary norms. The consequences of this dramatic shift cannot be overestimated. Therefore n-6 and n-3 fatty acids compete for the same conversion enzymes. This means that the quantity of n-6 in the diet directly affects the conversion of n-3 ALA, found in plant foods, to long-chain n-3 EPA and DHA, which protect us from disease.

Float Therapy Helps Veterans Suffering from PTSD

Our nation's heroes are hurting. After serving the US in conflict areas of the world, many veterans are returning home with PTSD and other ailments. There are plenty of traditional treatments, but for a section of veterans --  medication and therapy haven't been enough.
